Rhode Island artist-educators feature prominently in the "NetWorks 2011/2012" exhibition opening June 1 at the Newport Art Museum. An opening reception will be held May 31 from 5-7pm at the Museum. Professors from Brown, Rhode Island School of Design, Wellesley College, Roger Williams University, Connecticut College and the San Francisco Art institute are represented, as are secondary school educators from Hope High, other Providence public schools, and AS220. The exhibition coincides with the Newport Art Museum's celebration of its 100th year of offering art education.

Joining the art educators in this multimedia exhibit is an array of artists - from Barnaby Evans, creator of Water Fire, and Eugene Lee, Tony-Award winning set designer - to rug designer Meg Little and comic book and poster artist Brian Chippendale. Twenty-five Rhode Island artists were selected for this year's exhibition, highlighting the creative energy of the state.

Produced by Joseph A. Chazan, M.D., NetWorks Rhode Island annually showcases and records the work, achievements, methods, and profiles of Rhode Island artists. "For me, the NetWorks project further validates for Rhode Island artists the significance of what they do as they toil daily, usually in a solitary way, seeking excellence and striving to overcome the vicissitudes and doubts that come with working as artists," says Dr. Chazan. "It is with the utmost respect and admiration that I enthusiastically present NetWorks 2011 and 2012."
The exhibition provides an opportunity to connect with the working lives of some of the region's highly respected artists," says Nancy Whipple Grinnell, curator of the Newport Art Museum. "The Museum acknowledges Dr. Chazan's vision and dedication to NetWorks, and we are excited to be part of it."

Richard Goulis's video portraits of the NetWorks artists can be viewed on YouTube. A catalogue designed by Malcolm Grear Designers accompanies the exhibition, and will be on sale at the Museum
